A Personal Reflection on the Holy Father’s Visit: A Young Catholic Medical Professional Perspective
My name is Laura António de Jesus, I’m in my final year as a medical student from the department of General Medicine, faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the National University of Timor-Leste (UNTL), I had the distinct honor of witnessing the Holy Father’s visit to Timor-Leste. His presence was more than just a historical event; for me, it was a deeply transformative experience that has left an indelible mark on my life both as a Catholic and a young medical professional.
The Intersection of Faith, Culture and Healthcare
The theme of Pope Francis’ visit to Timor-Leste, “Our Fate is Our Culture”, resonated deeply with me as a young Timorese medical professional. Our culture is rich in values such as community, respect for life, and compassion – principles that are inherently tied to our faith and should guide our actions, especially in the field of healthcare. As the Holy Father reminded us, our future is shaped by how we preserve and embody these values in our daily lives. For me, this means integrating the traditions and moral foundation of our culture into my practice as a medical professional, ensuring that I not only heal the body but also honor the dignity of each person I treat.
Our culture has always placed a strong emphasis on caring for one another, particularly the sick, the elderly, and the vulnerable. As a medical professional, I feel a profound responsibility to carry this cultural legacy forward by providing compassionate and holistic care to my patients. Pope Francis’ visit reinforced the importance of combining our cultural and faith-based principles with the scientific knowledge I’ve gained as a young medical professional, so that I can serve my community in a way that respects both our heritage and the advancements of modern medicine.
The Challenges for Young Doctors: Striving for Specialization Amidst Limited Opportunities
As a young medical professional in Timor-Leste, one of the biggest challenges I, and many of my peers, face is the lack of opportunities to pursue further specialization. While the country has made significant strides in medical education, there remains a critical shortage of programs and pathways for young doctors to continue their studies and train in specific fields. Specialization often requires going abroad, but the barriers to doing so – including financial constraints, limited scholarships, and complex application processes – are daunting for many of us.
Pope Francis’ message to the youth, encouraging us to dream big and strive for something greater, resonated deeply with these struggles. His words reminded me that while the path may seem difficult, our dreams are not impossible. As young medical professionals, we must persist in finding opportunities to grow and develop, not just for ourselves, but for the betterment of healthcare in Timor-Leste. The Pope’s message gave me the courage to continue seeking ways to overcome these challenges, whether through international scholarships, partnerships with foreign universities, or support from global medical communities.
Many of us long to specialize in areas such as pediatrics, surgery, or internal medicine, but the lack of structured specialist programs in Timor-Leste means that we must often look abroad for training. This is not just a personal challenge, but a national issue – without more specialists, the healthcare system in our country cannot provide the level of care our people need. The Pope’s call to dream big reminded me that although the road is tough, we must keep pushing for change and advocating for more opportunities to further our medical education.
Pope Francis’ Call to Protect and Care for Children
One part of Pope Francis’ visit that touched me deeply was his homily during the Tasi Tolu Mass, where he emphasized the importance of protecting children and ensuring their well-being. He spoke with great tenderness about the need to care for the most vulnerable in society, particularly children, who are the future of Timor-Leste and the world. This message resonated profoundly with my own commitment to child welfare, to which I’ve dedicated much of my professional energy.
As the Project Manager of “Shine to Child”, a community-driven initiative under the Women Leadership Program, I have worked to improve the welfare of children in Timor-Leste by focusing on education, healthcare access, and nutrition. The project was born out of a desire to give every child the opportunity to thrive in a safe and supportive environment. Pope Francis’ words during the Tasi Tolu Mass gave me renewed hope and strength to continue advocating for these children, especially those living in remote areas with limited access to essential services.
The Holy Father reminded us that caring for children is not only an act of charity but a fundamental duty as Catholics. His call aligns perfectly with the mission of “Shine to Child,” as we work to ensure that every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, receives the care, protection, and love they deserve. His homily was a powerful confirmation that this work is not only necessary but is deeply aligned with our faith.
Becoming the “Perfume of Christ”: The Call to Reflect His Love
The Holy Father’s visit to the Cathedral of Dili was particularly moving. There, he spoke of the need for all of us to become the “perfume of Christ” in the world, spreading His love and compassion wherever we go. This powerful metaphor resonated deeply with me as a young Catholic Medical Professional. It is not enough to simply heal the body; I must also strive to reflect Christ’s love in every interaction with my patients, my colleagues, and the communities I serve.
In healthcare, we often deal with suffering, illness, and despair. The Pope’s message reminded me that as a follower of Christ, I am called to bring hope and healing not just through medicine, but through love, kindness, and a sense of peace. This idea of becoming the “perfume of Christ” challenges me to live out my faith through my work, letting His compassion and mercy flow through every decision I make as a healthcare professional.
Strengthening the Call to Serve
The Pope’s visit also amplified my desire to give back to my community. Throughout my time as a medical student and volunteer coordinator, I have always valued the opportunity to help those in need, whether through teaching or social projects. However, seeing the Pope’s dedication to the poor and the marginalized strengthened my commitment to making healthcare more accessible to everyone, especially in underserved areas of Timor-Leste.
As the CEO and co-founder of Matak Saudavel, a project aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices, I have been involved in community outreach and education. Now, inspired by the Pope’s visit, I want to expand my work by integrating healthcare initiatives into these efforts, particularly focusing on health education and preventive care in rural communities. This visit reaffirmed my belief that as a Catholic and a medical professional, I am called to serve not just through clinical practice, but also by addressing the broader determinants of health, such as education and access to resources.
A Path Forward: Faith in Action
The Holy Father’s visit was not just a moment of inspiration, but a call to action. His words continue to guide me as I plan to further my education and participate in global discussions about healthcare ethics and social justice. My recent participation in the YSEALI Academic Fellowship and the Women Leadership Program has provided me with international exposure and leadership skills. I hope to use these skills to advocate for ethical medical practices that align with the values of compassion and respect for human dignity, which Pope Francis so beautifully embodies.
As I move forward in my career, I carry the Holy Father’s message with me. His visit has renewed my commitment to being a doctor who not only heals the body but also tends to the spirit, treating each patient with the respect, compassion, and love that our faith teaches.
Conclusion: A Renewed Sense of Purpose
For me, the Pope’s visit was a powerful reminder that the practice of medicine is not just about science and technology, but about service and humanity. It reminded me that every patient is a person with a soul, deserving of care that reflects the love and mercy of God. As I continue my journey as a medical professional, I am committed to using my skills and faith to make a positive impact, both within the walls of the hospital and out in the community.
