The Impact of Pope Francis’ visit to Timor Leste

The Apostolic visit of His Holiness, Pope Francis, to Timor Leste occured from the 9th to the 11th of September 2024. This aforementioned historic event showered the country with bountiful blessings as it served as a symbolism of God’s gift that would remain in every Timorese’s heart. This is indeed a milestone for the Catholic faith.

Various preparations were conducted in Timor Leste prior to His Holiness, Pope Francis’ visit. Repeated news and announcements advertised the visit of the Pope, as well as materials to glorify his holy being were distributed among the countrymen. Furthermore, a daily prayer dedicated for Pope Francis was heard in all of Timor Leste’s Catholic Churches. Parish retreats were also held, organizing sessions of faith and culture. It was evident how this particular event animated the excitement of the people far and wide.

This was just but a mere indication of how his visit was happily longed for. Tragically, there was an unforeseen circumstance wherein some strategic roads would be closed for three days with no possibility of travel neither by road, sea nor air.

However, this proved everyone wrong because it was not an issue at all for the country of Timor Leste who waited for this day to come. Thousands of people from various parts of the country — from the mountainsides, far away districts, and even islands — came to Dili and slept in tents for about three to five (3 to 5) days prior to Pope Francis’s arrival. This showed the dedication of the country to welcome and witness the holiness of the said pope.

No government restriction could ever stop the people to come and accompany Pope Francis with his visit, and wholeheartedly accepted his glorious blessings. It did not matter if they would need to travel miles under the scorching heat of the sun. They were already overwhelmed with joy as they danced and sang — “Viva, Papa Francisco!”, “We love you, Papa Francisco?”, “To see you and be blessed is enough for us!”

People would ask what are the impacts of Pope Francis’ visit to Timor Leste. The answers are evident within the memories of each people who witnessed those days. Pope Francis and his joyful, loving fatherly presence embraced every place he visited, giving the people an assurance of hope and love.

All together, this experience would surely be worth a meaning to everyone who was there at those precious times of meeting, listening to his message and receiving his blessings.

Here are Pope Francis’ messages of love, encouragement, hope and challenge to some group he visited:

  1. The message of Pope Francis to government Officials. “”A new horizon has opened before you. Cleared of dark clouds, but with new challenges to face and new problems to solve. That is why I want to say — may the faith, which has enlightened and sustained you in the past, continue to inspire your present and future.”
  2. Visiting  the handicapped children for Alma Sister. “I want to thank you for what you do, and I also want to thank the girls and boys and the young men who gave us testimony of letting ourselves be cared for. Because they teach us how we should be cared for by God. They are our teachers.”
  3. Meeting with Timor Leste’s Clergy, Religious Officials and Catechists. His message:

“You are the fragrance of Christ.” He further urged them to preserve and spread the fragrance of the Gospel in Timor Leste. Timor Leste is at the edge of the world -that it is the centre of the Gospel. Using the metaphor of Sandal, a wood native of the region, he urged the Timorese clergy, catechists, religious officials to return to the essence of faith, recognizing that they are the fragrance of Christ”.

  • Message of Pope Francis Timorese youth: “I wish you to go ahead forward with the joy of youth. But do not forget that you are heirs of those who preceeded you in founding the nation…Live out your faith, love, peace and unity. Donot stop smiling. And you, young people, you are the majority of the population of this land and your presence fills the land with life, hope and future, Donot lose the enthusiasm of faith. In short I have three messages for you:

Young people are half way on the path of life. Between the young child, and the adult and you the Pope continued to say do you know what is one of the most beautiful riches of a society? They are the elderly, you and the children.

Dear young people be heirs to the beautiful history that preceeded you. Carry it forward. Have courage. And if you quarrel, reconcile. We must love each other beyond all ethnic or religious differences.

Thank you for your joy and your smile. Pope Francis already went back home, and yet his smile and teachings remained at the hearts of the people. It became an example to the people to smile amidst of any problem, and always be a witness of the Joy of the Gospel.

This experience indeed transformed every witnessing Timoreese to be a better person with a better outlook in life — and that is just one of the gifts that Pope Francis left the country with…………………
